Underwater New York Features Prof’s Photography

Photographs by Susannah Ray, adjunct associate professor of Fine Arts, Design, Art History, were featured on the cover and inside an online journal published by Underwater New York, an organization that serves as promoter, sustainer, and disseminator of work about our city and water.

The photographs featured are drawn from two distinct bodies of Ray’s work, Down For the Day and A Further Shore. Both series are part of a larger cycle of projects that look at New York City’s intricate and complicated relationship with its waters: the beaches, bays, and rivers where its diverse citizenry comes in contact with nature and each other. While Down For the Day and A Further Shore frequently depict people engaging in leisure activities, those who labor on the water are also present.

This latest installment of Underwater New York’s journal, The Labor Issue, marks the organization’s 10th anniversary.
