DeMatteis Graduates Largest Class

Approximately 130 faculty members, parents and students gathered in Hofstra’s University Club to celebrate the 2019 engineering and computer science graduates at the 3rd Annual DeMatteis Recognition Luncheon last month.

Associate Dean David Rooney, Ph.D  greeted the graduates and their families.

“There is indeed a nobility to the work you are now intellectually equipped to participate in by virtue of your soon to be bestowed degree,” Rooney said.  “Keep that sense of honor always in view, and let your goal be the promotion of the well-being of your fellow human beings in everything you do.  If you can do that, you will earn their respect and the job will be well done.”

The 2019 graduating DeMatteis class is the largest one to date with approximately 160 graduates this year compared to about 120 last year.

“Your education at the DeMatteis School has laid the platform for you to springboard your success,” Dean Rabbany told students.  “It has already instilled confidence, inspiring you to imagine what you are capable of next.  Every one of you should use your innovative mindset to tackle critical global challenges and make our world for the better.”

Computer science alumni Aizaz Chaudary ’18, a Software Developer
at LBi Software and engineering graduate Ian Kornfeld ’15, a Senior Engineer
for National Grid, shared their career experiences and advice for new graduates.

“As engineers and computer scientists we have a huge role in
the future to build it better, stronger and safer,” Kornfeld said.  “We need to do our due diligence and keep
improving, keep growing and keep caring so we build a better future for
tomorrow.”

Other luncheon speakers included computer science graduate Aman
Luthra ’19, Dr. Richard J. Puerzer, chair of the Department of Engineering, Carmela
Rossi, director of the Office of Alumni Affairs and Dr. Krishnan
Pillaipakkamnatt, chair of the Department of Computer Science.
