Athletics Teams To Have Off On Election Day To Vote

Hofstra University Vice President and Director of Athletics Rick Cole Jr., in conjunction with the University’s 15 head coaches, has announced that all Pride athletic teams will be off from any mandatory team activities on Tuesday, November 3, to encourage student-athletes to exercise their right to vote on Election Day.

The Department of Athletics is partnering with the Hofstra Votes campaign to assist Pride student-athletes in the process of registering to vote and then how to go about voting (in-person or absentee).

“We always talk about building champions in academics, athletics, community, and life here at Hofstra with our student-athletes,” commented Cole. “In conjunction with the Hofstra Votes campaign on campus, we think it is incredibly important for our student-athletes to have their voices heard and their votes counted. We are thrilled to come together as a group to assist our student-athletes in the process via voter registration and then providing them an outlet on Election Day to perform their civic duty.”

“What an incredible message to send to our student-athletes and those in the Hofstra community about the importance of voting,” stated Hofstra Head Men’s Basketball Coach Joe Mihalich. “I think this is a wonderful opportunity for our program to be front and center in the process and show everyone that they are interested in making a difference and having their voices heard.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our student-athletes voices to be heard,” said Hofstra Head Women’s Basketball Coach Danielle Santos Atkinson. “Empowering this generation of athletes to use their platform to enact change, by exercising their right to vote is a significant message from the University.”

“As a student-athlete, I feel that it is great for Hofstra to encourage its athletic community to vote in this way,” mentioned cross country/track student-athlete Leah Gath. “Young people are always being told that they can and will have an impact if they only take action to do so, and this opportunity to vote without concern for scheduling or other conflicts truly allows for student-athletes to recognize this ability. I am very much looking forward to voting on November 3, and plan on encouraging all of my teammates and friends to do the same.”

“Being a student-athlete at Hofstra comes with unbelievable responsibility,” stated men’s lacrosse student-athlete William Morris. “You have a responsibility to commit to both academic and athletic excellence. To be a part of an institution that encourages student-athletes to make their voices heard through voting while also providing the resources to do so is remarkable. By partnering with the Hofstra Votes campaign, the athletic department sends a loud and strong message to student-athletes about the importance of participating in the political process. Giving student-athletes the time to vote shows the department’s serious commitment to this cause. I urge all student-athletes to take advantage of this opportunity and make their voices heard in the most important place, the election booth.”

ABOUT HOFSTRA VOTESLaunched in Fall 2018 by President Stuart Rabinowitz, Hofstra Votes is a civic engagement campaign designed to encourage members of the campus community to register and vote. On the Hofstra Votes website, you’ll find an online voter registration tool, a calendar of Hofstra Votes events, and information about registration and absentee ballot deadlines in your state. (College students who are eligible to vote can register at their home address or their college address). And be sure to use #HofstraVotes to share your civic engagement activities. Voting is both a responsibility and a privilege, and we encourage you to begin your commitment to civic engagement by learning more about the issues and registering to vote.
