Hofstra University Creates Programs in Collaboration with Marques Colston ‘06

Hofstra University is creating programs in the Hofstra Department of Athletics and the School of Health Professions and Human Services, including the Marques Colston Fellowship, in collaboration with the former football student-athlete.

“As a student-athlete, as a professional, and as an alumnus, Marques Colston has always been a generous and thoughtful member of the community, who consistently gave of himself and exhibited the highest standards of excellence,” said Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz. “We are so pleased that he has continued to be an active member of the Hofstra family, through these gifts as well as his service on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the School of Health Professions and Human Services.” “Marques is an incredible representative of Hofstra University and our athletics program,” commented Hofstra Director of Athletics Rick Cole Jr. “His generosity towards Hofstra and our athletics program is incredible and we are very thankful for his support. Marques’ accomplishments at Hofstra and during his professional and business career speak for themselves and we are proud of the many successes he has achieved.”

The programs will support student-athletes and students who are pursuing health careers. The Colston Fellowship will support experiential learning opportunities for health majors each year. The second initiative will support Hofstra Athletics by providing student-athletes with transformative learning and life experiences.“My experience at Hofstra provided a solid foundation to start my professional journey after graduation- in both sports and business,” said Colston. “I’m excited to partner with the university to create programming and resources that help the next generation of students and student athletes build successful career paths.”

Holly Seirup, dean of the School of Health Professions and Human Services added, “we are thrilled that Marques has joined our advisory council and look forward to his active engagement with our students and specifically the Colston fellows.”  A four-year letterman and a three-year starter at Hofstra from 2001 through 2005, Colston was selected in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints after an outstanding career with the Pride. As a senior, he was an All-Atlantic 10 Football Conference first team selection and held the Hofstra record for career receiving yards. Colston posted 70 receptions for 975 yards and five touchdowns in 2005 to finish his career with 182 receptions for 2,834 yards and 18 touchdowns. His 182 catches rank third on the Hofstra career reception list, while his 2,834 yards is second. Colston, whose jersey number 89 was retired in 2008, earned his bachelor of arts degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2006.

Colston played in 146 career games for the Saints with 106 starts and recorded 711 receptions for 9,759 yards and 72 touchdowns. Colston is ranked first in club record books in catches, receiving yardage, receiving touchdowns, total touchdowns (72) and tied for first with 28 100-yard receiving performances. A Saints All-50th Team selection in 2016, Colston will be inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame this October.

Off the field, Colston has also excelled as an entrepreneur and investor at the intersection of sports, wellness, and technology. His consulting firm Dynasty Innovation specializes in accelerating growth in early stage to emerging companies and small businesses. He is the Managing Director for the Center for Innovation at Virtua Health systems, and also serves on the Advisory Board for the One Team Collective, a sports technology accelerator run by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). As a sought-after speaker and facilitator, Colston’s inspiring sincerity and storytelling about leadership on the field and the synergies in professional and entrepreneurial careers engages audiences across industries.
