The School of Health Professions and Human Services celebrated the opening of its new digital Anatomy & Physiology laboratory with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, April 28, 2021.
The new facility consists of a laboratory and extended workspace that in total carry five Anatomage Inc. digital dissection tables and software, an Anatomage Inc. Wall, an ultrasound machine, anatomy models, and several large display screens that will enhance learning for undergraduate and graduate students. The Anatomage Inc. software allows students to interact with human anatomy systems in a high-resolution interactive platform. Hofstra University is the only institution of higher learning in New York state to have a digital anatomy suite featuring this equipment.
“Our new Anatomy & Physiology Lab is the latest milestone in the School of Health Professions and Human Services’ mission to provide valuable learning environments that help our students become highly qualified healthcare professionals and advocates,” said HPHS Dean Holly Seirup. “These spaces provide critical hands-on experience that students can take directly into their work in the communities where they will serve.”
The hybrid ceremony was held with a limited number of representatives of Hofstra University, Empire State Development and Anatomage Inc. in attendance, while more than 60 other guests participated virtually. Joining Dean Seirup for the ceremonial ribbon cutting was Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Margaret Abraham and Barry Greenspan, economic development program administrator at Empire State Development.
Construction of the two digital spaces, which comprise a combined renovated area of 2,061 square feet, was a $900,000 project, which included a $180,000 grant from the New York State Empire State Development Regional Council Capital Fund.
“It is critical that we train the next generation of New York’s workers who are on the front lines delivering the best health care possible,” said Empire State Development Acting Commissioner and President & CEO-designate Eric Gertler. “Empire State Development is proud to support Hofstra’s new digital Anatomy and Psychology Lab, which will help ensure our future health care professionals are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge as they enter this essential profession.”
The laboratory space located in 026 Hagedorn Hall, which fully opened in January 2020, serves as the primary learning location for Anatomy & Physiology I and II, courses taken by undergraduate students pursuing careers in health. The lab can hold 24 students and one professor, and features one Anatomage Inc. digital dissection table, an ultrasound machine, and several large display screens.
The new extension, located in 054 Hagedorn Hall, is an interdisciplinary lab space that is open to all undergraduate and graduate students and faculty, with capacity to hold 24 students and one or more professors at a time. The room has four Anatomage digital dissection tables, as well as an Anatomage Wall, a wall-mounted digital dissection table that consists of four 60-inch screens with 4K resolution.
“Anatomage is honored to play an integral role in Hofstra University’s plans to deliver an unprecedented learning experience for students preparing to enter healthcare professions,” said Christian Carmino, northeastern regional sales representative for Anatomage Inc, who also attended the ceremony and gave a demonstration of the digital table features.
The Anatomy & Physiology Lab is the latest addition to the School of Health Professions and Human Services’ facilities, which include learning spaces for exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, athletic training, occupational therapy, speech language hearing sciences, and audiology. The School offers undergraduate and graduate programs in health professions, counseling and mental health science, and speech-language-hearing sciences.
