Prof Publishes Article in “Educational Policy”

Rebecca Natow, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the School of Education, has published an article, “Research Use and Politics in the Federal Higher Education Rulemaking Process,” in the peer-reviewed journal, Educational Policy.

The article presents findings from a case study on how research has been used in the process for creating regulations governing higher education in the U.S. Department of Education. By documenting how politics fuses with the traditional ways decision makers use research, Dr. Natow’s study identified three politically infused forms of research use that have not appeared in previous literature. Her study also found that the widespread political nature of research use in the rulemaking process has resulted in participants not trusting research presented in the process as well as policy actors using the same or similar data to reach different conclusions.
