Early Medical School Graduation Helps Meet Increased Need for Physicians

Medical students in their final year at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell will graduate early and have the option to begin temporary employment at Northwell Health hospitals to assist in the fight against the COVID-19 virus before beginning their residencies over the summer. Responding to a directive from Governor Andrew Cuomo allowing graduating med students to practice immediately due to the ongoing pandemic, the 102 members of the Class of 2020 will now graduate on April 10, a month ahead of schedule. A virtual graduation ceremony is planned for May 11.

“We are proud of the graduates and happy to be able to contribute to the health care needs of New York,” said Lawrence G. Smith, MD, MACP, founding dean of the Zucker School of Medicine. “We are confident that their education and many hours of hard work have prepared them well to join their colleagues in the heroic task of facing this pandemic, rendering care and providing comfort to those affected by COVID-19 and beyond.”

Zucker School of Medicine students were matched to their residency locations on March 20, the National Residency Matching Program’s (NRMP) official Match Day. Out of 99 participating students, 30 were matched into Northwell Health residency programs. Fifty-one students matched into hospitals in New York state; 29 matched into facilities in New York City, including Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, and New York Presbyterian and Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. First-year residents, under the supervision of veteran attending physicians, are an integral part of a health system’s care team.
