An upcoming Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) panel will feature members of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication in a discussion about the challenges of balancing a demanding journalism career with family life.
The panel, “A High-Wire Balancing Act: Do Journalism and Family Mix?,” will be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020 from 6-7:30 pm at Herald Community Newspapers, 2 Endo Blvd., Garden City, New York.
Adjunct journalism professor Scott Brinton, executive editor of Herald Community Newspapers and president of PCLI, will serve as moderator. Panelists include:
• Shawna Van Ness, adjunct journalism professor and Newsday senior assistant managing editor for features and entertainment
• Kim Como, Newsday communications manager
• Jeff Bessen, Herald Community Newspapers senior editor and PCLI board member
All four professionals, who are married with children, will discuss how they built successful careers, despite late hours and unpredictable news cycles, while raising families.
The event is open to both students and working journalists, and includes a pizza dinner. Hofstra alumni, staff, and faculty are also invited to attend.
