Exploring Media Careers in LA

Nineteen students from the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication are exploring  media careers in the nation’s entertainment capital, as part of the sixth annual “Hofstra in LA” program.

They will spend 10 days traveling around Los Angeles, where they will meet and network with industry leaders, including Hofstra alumni, in fields such as television, film, publicity, journalism, and digital marketing.   

Almost two dozen meetings, tours, and activities are scheduled with executives at top entertainment and media companies including NBC News, Disney/ABC Studios, Sundance Institute, Warner Bros., Netflix, ICM, Paramount, Apple TV, Universal Content Productions, Sunshine Sachs, and Edelman, among others.  The students will also attend two panel discussions with alumni who are working in LA as successful filmmakers, production and development executives, marketing managers, creative directors, media relations managers, producers, and script writers. 

A highlight of the trip includes a networking reception at the DGA (Directors Guild of America) Theater Complex on Tuesday, January 14.  The students will also have free time to explore iconic attractions including the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Santa Monica Pier, and Beverly Hills.

The 19 participating students include juniors, seniors, and a December 2019 graduate. They were selected from a competitive pool of applicants on the basis of good academic standing, faculty references, and an application.

Jessica Zagacki ’20, television production and studies

The students are accompanied by Herbert School Associate Dean Adria Marlowe, Associate Professor of Journalism, Media Studies and Public Relations Jeff Morosoff, and Associate Professor Emeritus of Radio, Television, Film Peter Gershon, during the trip, which is from Jan. 8-18th.

The cost of the program is offset by support from the LHSC Dean’s Advisory Board, alumni, and other benefactors.  A limited number of full sponsorships were also provided by Hofstra alumni to ensure that deserving students can participate in the program regardless of economic background.

“Hofstra in LA” expands upon the many opportunities Hofstra students already have to engage with alumni and industry leaders on campus, in New York City, and abroad, and allows students to make valuable connections and gain insights that can help them succeed in a very competitive market.
