Challenging Conventional Maps

Professor Craig Dalton

Craig Dalton, assistant professor of global studies and geography, was featured in a article for his work on “counter-maps,” which refer to cartographic tools that show marginalized groups in society that were previously overlooked or ignored.

“Mapping has been the tool of empires and governments for 500 years,” Dalton said, pointing to the days of Columbus and other Western explorers who used geographic tools to colonize civilizations around the globe. “What happens when maps get into hands of people who’ve been victims of cartographic sleights of hand?”
