I’ve heard that if you want to find meaning, you have to be able to give meaning to others.
So, my question to you this week is: what are you doing to give meaning to others?
If you have time and space in your life to contribute, think about planning to volunteer through one of the opportunities at the Center for Civic Engagement or through HCLAS and CARECEN, where you can work with immigrants and refugees on English language and citizenship skills. You can find out more about the CARECEN opportunity through Hofstra here. Volunteer opportunities at CARECEN are already filled up for the Fall 2019 semester, but we will be opening up registration for Spring 2020 volunteer slots for the Spring 2020 semester before Thanksgiving and I will announce it in the “Opportunities Section” of the weekly message when registration opens.
I also want to call your attention to a few events this week: Details about all of these events are listed below in the “Events Section.”
The Internship and Career Fair is on Wednesday – even if you’re not looking for a job or internship now, it’s a great opportunity to explore what that process will be like when you are ready, so as to increase the likelihood of your success down the road.
Also on Wednesday we have Day of Dialogue with lots of events about immigration and migration, topics that have been much in the news. Come to one or more of these events and get informed (or more informed)!
And still another event on Wednesday, a presentation by NY State Senator Jessica Ramos in our Lives in Public Policy and Public Service series.
On Friday evening we will have our Fall Oc-TUBA-fest! Tell me, what other university has a tuba festival? Go and have fun and enjoy the tuba music – it’s a quintessential Hofstra experience!
Also this weekend we have opening night and the first weekend of our annual fall musical, Legally Blonde: The Musical. Go and enjoy the comedy and music and the performances of your classmates! I’ve got my tickets already and can’t wait!
With best wishes,
Last week, I omitted one name and misspelled another in an attempt to extend my congratulations, so this week I’m going to try to get it right: Congratulations to Lawrence Tang, Harminder Pathania, and Ranganath Srinivasan who participated in the Policy Hackathon organized by the Hofstra University Center for Entrepreneurship and the Kalikow School, with support from the Nassau County Comptroller’s Office, held on our campus on Oct. 11. Special congratulations to Ranganath Srinivasan who won the Innovation Award at this competition. There will be another Hackathon coming either next semester or next year so stay tuned to these weekly messages for information about how YOU can participate in the next Hackathon here at Hofstra!
Congratulations to all the HCLAS seniors who were recognized with awards for academic excellence in their majors last week. I’ll be tweeting about you individually starting later this semester, so follow me on twitter @benrifkin!
