Hofstra and Trailblazers PAC Workshop Aimed at Supporting Transparent, Honest Government
Hofstra University is partnering with Trailblazers PAC to offer a free workshop Saturday, Oct. 26 to help students and local residents learn how to run for elected office or get involved in a campaign for a candidate or a cause.
The “Front Porch Politics” workshop, part of the Hofstra Votes civic engagement initiative, will teach participants the nuts-and-bolts of navigating the electoral process. Trailblazers PAC is a non-partisan organization that supports local candidates who are committed to in-district fundraising and campaign finance transparency. The organization’s mission is “moving politics out of the backroom and onto the front porch.”
“Attendees will be surprised to learn that undisclosed money has an even bigger effect on local-level races than on Presidential or Congressional races,” said Trailblazers Executive Committee member Lindsey Johnson, who is also a 2009 Hofstra political science alum.
“When candidates choose to act better than campaign finance laws require — as our model requires — they are more, not less, competitive,” She said. Johnson will lead the workshop with Leslie Danks Burke, Trailblazers Founder and President, Alli Woodard, Trailblazers PAC Executive Director, Joel Acevedo, President of the Brooklyn Young Republicans and a member of Trailblazers PAC’s Stakeholder Board, and Carolyn Riggs, principal of Rural Majority
“Whenever one party controls politics, there’s potential for corruption, and we can counter that by getting back to basics and reconnecting with local communities,” Acevedo said.
Dr. Rosanna Perotti, a Hofstra political science professor who helped organize the workshop, hopes the event will spur more students to get involved in politics and consider running for office.
“Regardless of their partisanship, [young voters] tend to support a larger role for government, greater government action on climate change, and increasing racial and ethnic diversity, Perotti said. “The future is theirs; shouldn’t they take a larger responsibility for shaping it?”
The Trailblazers PAC “Front Porch Politics Workshop” will be on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 11 AM in the David S. Mack Student Center Room 141. Advance registration is preferred at Hofstra.edu/frontporchform
