Closing the World’s Digital Divide

Professor Craig Dalton
NPR's "All Things Considered"

Craig Dalton, assistant professor of global studies and geography, was interviewed by NPR’s All Things Considered for a feature they did on Google Street View, and how a young Silicon Valley professional originally from Zimbabwe has taken it upon himself to travel through his homeland, uploading images to the mapping service. That the country was previously missing, along with many other African nations, “highlighted a digital divide between his hometown and major Western cities.”

Professor Dalton notes, however, that “Google Maps is not a public service. Google Maps is a product from a company, and things are included and excluded based on the company’s needs. Sometimes that means that things are excluded that have a lot of merit but that don’t fit the business plan. And sometimes that means that things are included even if that feels like a violation of our privacy.”
