Best to “Err With Caution” on Contaminant Cleanup

Dr. Bret Bennington, professor and chair of the Department of Geology, Environment and Sustainability, is quoted in a Newsday article about opposition from the U.S. Navy to New York state’s $585 million plan that would fully clean up and contain groundwater pollution coming from former Northrop Grumman and Navy-owned facilities in Bethpage .

The US Navy and Northrop Grumman are being held responsible for Long Island’s largest groundwater plume containing carcinogenic contaminants, but both are advocating only for modest steps toward a cleanup.

Dr. Bennington, who teaches a course on groundwater, told Newsday that the state’s plan “errs on the side of caution. When you’re dealing with a sole source aquifer like we have on Long Island, which is an incredibly precious resource, you should err on the side of caution.”
