I hope that the first week of classes was successful for you and that you’ve settled into the new rhythms of the fall semester.
This week may you find that your engagement in the courses you are taking and the friendships you are making grow deeper and deeper.
Speaking of which, I encourage all who are interested to apply to join the HCLAS Student Advisory Council (see below in Opportunities).
As you begin to think about opportunities for winter break and the spring semester, please keep in mind the Transformative Learning Grant, available to all HCLAS students with demonstrated financial need. The deadline to apply for this grant for projects in January 2020 or Spring 2020 is Tuesday, October 15. You will find all the information about the grant at this website: www.hofstra.edu/tlg and remember that it is only for students with demonstrated financial need as verified by Student Financial Services.
Congratulations to drama student Ali Estey ’21 for participating in the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s apprentice program, through which she was in a production of All’s Well that Ends Well this summer in Boston.
Congratulations to our Department of Global Studies and Geography’s chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographical Honor Society, for having won the Honors Chapter award again this year – for the fifth consecutive year! The award is given for spreading awareness of Geography through recognizing outstanding student scholarship and conducting campus service. This last year our Hofstra Geographical Honor Society (Mu Kappa) members have helped organize diversity dinners, applied for funding from the cultural center for the keynote speaker at the yearly induction ceremony (Dr. Mona Domosh from Dartmouth), sold fair trade organic chocolate, collected and shipped used textbooks to the organization “Books for Africa”, represented the Department of Global Studies and Geography at the Honors College Accepted Students Expo, and presented posters and papers at the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Middle States conference in NJ. Student members have played an active role in running the honors chapter this year and were in charge of organizing and conducting the induction ceremony in April. Since Mu Kappa was founded in 2012, 136 students and faculty at Hofstra have been inducted into the society.
Congratulations to Dr. Meena Bose, Professor of Political Science, who has become a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a non-partisan think tank.
