An alum of the School of Education’s MSED and Ph.D. in Literacy Studies programs, Bobbie Kabuto, received the 2019 Research in Literacy Education Award from the United Kingdom Literacy Association (UKLA).
Dr. Kabuto’s award-winning paper, Family Narratives of Biliteracy, presents a study of how two bilingual mothers teach bilingualism within their families, and how this impacts the way they perceive their children’s learning to read.
The award is given annually for papers published in each of UKLA’s two journals, Literacy and Journal of Research in Reading. Dr. Kabuto’s paper was published in Literacy. Both are peer-reviewed journals with international reputations for excellence in scholarship.
“[Kabuto’s] paper contributes to the discussion on how bilingualism is conceptualised, and the extent to which Home Literacy is acknowledged,” said Dr. Wayne Tennent, chair of the award panel for UKLA. “By bringing together these two elements this paper provides a lens through which educators can question their assumptions towards the teaching of bilingual learners.”
