Professor Honored for Advocacy Work

Mary Anne Trasciatti, PhD, associate professor of rhetoric and public advocacy, was honored  recently as a “woman of distinction” by the Long Beach City Council as part of its Women’s History Month celebrations.

Dr. Trasciatti, a Long Beach resident, was recognized for her work as president of the board of directors for the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition, a charitable organization that seeks to preserve the memory of a deadly fire at the Triangle Waist Factory in 1911 that killed 146 people, mostly young immigrant women, and became a rallying cry for the international labor movement.  The coalition commemorates the anniversary of the fire every March 25th and is working to install a permanent public art memorial in New York City.

In 2013, Dr. Trasciatti also directed an oral history project that archived the experiences of Long Beach residents during Superstorm Sandy.
