Newsday

Professor Emeritus of History Michael D’Innocenzo and Adjunct Associate Professor of Economics Martin Melkonian were profiled by Newsday reporter and Hofstra alumnus Jim Merritt ’78, ’87. The longtime professors recently endowed two “peace fellows” to help give students the financial freedom to spend more time outside the classroom working on local and far-reaching community programs and projects.

Together, Professors D’Innocenzo and Melkonian have logged more than 110 years teaching and have been collaborators in the classroom and the Long Island community. They frequently work together through Hofstra’s Center of Civic Engagement (CCE), the Institute of Peace Studies (IPS) and are co-founders of the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives. Their shared interest in civil rights and social justice has inspired many of their students to graduate as civic-minded, active citizens. (
