Dear HCLAS Students:
Welcome and welcome back to Hofstra for the Spring 2019 semester. I’m your friendly neighborhood dean, Benjamin Rifkin (please call me Dr. Rifkin or Dean Rifkin), and at the request of the HCLAS Student Advisory Council, with this email I’m inaugurating a practice of a weekly message to communicate with you about events and opportunities. You can look forward to seeing a message like this every Monday during the semester, except the week of Fall Break, until the beginning of Final Exams.
As we reconvene for the spring semester and you begin to go to your classes, I am taking this opportunity to remind you that you belong here. Sometimes, after we’ve been away and return to campus, it might feel a little strange. For those of you missing friends, family, or the sights, smells, and sounds familiar from home, wherever that may be, I say: Hofstra is your home, too, and the people of this community care about your success and believe in your success.
There are two opportunities I’d like to share with you:
The HCLAS Student Advisory Council seeks your help to create an HCLAS t-shirt to celebrate HCLAS Pride. If you’d like to submit a design for an HCLAS t-shirt, please note these parameters: Designs must accommodate being printed on Hofstra Blue or White t-shirts, both short and long sleeve; designs may be on the front, back, or both. The winner will receive an honorarium of $100 and a t-shirt. The College reserves the right to request modifications to a submitted design before accepting it for final production. If you’d like to submit your design, please send it by pdf attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5 pm on Friday, February 8, 2019. If you have friends on campus who are not HCLAS majors who’d like to participate, please share this information with them. (The opportunity is only open to Hofstra University students.)
The HCLAS Student Advisory Council is open for new members to join! If you’d like to participate in the SAC, which meets three times during the semester on Friday afternoons Feb. 15, March 22, and April 12, from 2 to 3:30 pm, please go to this link and fill out the form no later than 5 pm on Monday, February 4, 2019:
As the semester is just getting started, we don’t have a lot of events this week, but I do want to call your attention to the following two events this coming week:
Pushing Boundaries: American Art after World War II at the Emily Lowe Gallery, opens Tuesday, January 29: https://events.hofstra.edu/index.php?eID=31201
The Undergraduate Spring Involvement Fair will be held on Wed., January 30 from 11 am to 1 pm in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Student Center: https://events.hofstra.edu/index.php?eID=31673
The Marriage of Figaro is one of Mozart’s most beloved operas and the Hofstra Music Department is presenting it right here on campus on Friday, February 1 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, February 3 at 3 pm in the Sosnoff Theater (Cranford Adams Playhouse): https://events.hofstra.edu/index.php?eID=27642 – if you have never been to the opera, try it NOW. It will never be more convenient for you to go to the opera! Lastly, I invite you to follow HCLAS on social media:
I wish you all a great start to the Spring 2019 semester!
Your friendly neighborhood dean,
