Now Playing: KarmaRé

PC: Kaylee Maurer '18, Video/TV
Indie singer-songwriter and Hofstra alumna KarmaRé has released her first music video through Unispan Records, the university’s student-run record label

Also known as Rachel Karmel ’15, the music education alumna is the label’s second signed artist.

“It’s been a real hands-on experience, helping her through the process of recording and promoting the music,” said marketing major Christopher Wasieczko ‘19.

The acoustic-guitar-driven track is the first single off of the songstress’ impending Mood Ring release, a concept EP that connects her fascination with the healing properties of crystals to the therapeutics of songwriting.

“Every crystal has a specific purpose or power, just like my songs do,” said KarmaRé. “Get Over is about finding clarity and understanding during times of change. Like crystals absorb negative energy, so do these songs. When I finish and put them out into the world, they take that energy with them.”

KarmaRé’s new release is a follow up to her 2017 EP, Not Fazed, which spurred videos for its title track as well as Same Team.

Unispan Records, established in 2016, exists to provide Hofstra students with the opportunity to gain experience working at a record label while simultaneously acting as an independent company in the music industry. Students are guided by Sharon Goldsmith, Senior Associate Dean at Hofstra’s Center for Entrepreneurship and the label’s CEO. Goldsmith recruited a number of prestigious marketing and music industry professionals to advise students as Executives in Residence.

“Having music industry professionals guide our process was amazing and really insightful and confidence building,” said public relations major William Bounds ‘19.

Executives in Residence include: Head of Urban Marketing and Masters at Red Bull Records, Leota Blacknor; VP of A&R at Atlantic Records, Riggs Morales; Art Director at Universal Music Group, Alberto Erazo; Editor-in-chief of XXL Magazine, Vanessa Satten; Senior Director of Marketing and Digital Marketing at Asylum Records, Angel Martinez; and President of Varran Media LLC, Andre Morris.

Get Over is available to stream on AppleMusic, SpotifyAmazon, and all other major streaming and digital distribution services. The music video is also available to watch on YouTube.
