Hundreds of student volunteers took to the streets recently to help neighbors in need, as part of the annual Shake A Rake community cleanup effort.
More than 440 students from groups including athletics, club sports, fraternities and sororities, commuters, and student government worked in shifts on Saturday, November 17th to clean the yards of 55 homes of mostly elderly or disabled residents who live in the Hempstead and Uniondale communities surrounding campus. They also cleared the 1.5-acre yard of the John J. Byrne Community Center in Uniondale, as well as the grounds of the Cameron Estates Garden in Hempstead.
The annual program aims to connect Hofstra University with those in need in the surrounding community. The popular program has grown significantly since it first began in 2009 with 50 students volunteering at six houses.
