Fall Blood Drive

Hofstra University will host its fall blood drive on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 8 am-8 pm, in the Student Center Multipurpose Room.  The donations will benefit those in need in the New York area through Long Island Blood Services, the regional division of the New York Blood Center.

The need for donations is especially great now as flu season begins and keeps many donors at home, said Doreen Fiscina of Long Island Blood Services. Organizers hope to collect at least 350 pints during the drive.

In the Long Island and New York City area, almost 2,000 men, women and children need blood transfusions every day.  Since blood can only be preserved for 42 days, area hospitals continually face high demand to replenish supplies, particularly in the winter months. One pint of blood is separated into components that can save several lives.

Those in need include cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and mothers delivering babies, transplant recipients, surgery patients, and chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, Fiscina added.

All members of the Hofstra community who meet eligibility requirements are invited to participate, and each donor will be entered into raffle drawings for gift cards, T-shirts donated by the Athletics Department, and other prizes. In addition, an employee raffle drawing will be held for a $100 Amazon gift card as well as a pair of NY Islanders hockey tickets, courtesy of WBAB.

Walk-ins are welcome, or donor appointments can be made by emailing Elizabeth Lorentzen.  A valid photo ID is required.
