Voters Oust Independent Democrats

Vox; Newsday

Assistant Professor of Political Science Craig Burnett weighed in on the results of the Sept. 13 Democratic primary vote, which included the ousting of six senate members of the former Independent Democratic Conference, a breakaway group that only recently rejoined the Democratic Party. In particular, its former head and longtime Albany power player Jeffrey Klein was defeated by challenger and relative unknown Alessandra Biaggi.  Prof. Burnett notes that the results reflect an energized progressive voting base that is “willing to punish incumbents when the electorate perceives they are not acting in the best interests of their district.”
