Dr. Kevin Bisceglia, assistant professor of chemistry, was interviewed by NovaNext on PBS.org about the study of sewage and what it says about public health, drug use, and the environment. Wastewater collection, the article says, has been used in other countries to track public health threats, but has only recently gained traction in the United States.
“We are absolutely behind,” says Dr. Bisceglia in the article. “I actually moved away from this as an active area of research because there didn’t seem to be much interest at all in the U.S. But I would say in the last year or so it’s really, really spiked up.” Much of the new attention in the field has focused on finding opioids in wastewater.
