Radio Canada interviewed Professor of Global Studies and Geography Jean-Paul Rodrigue, an expert in maritime transport systems and logistics, for a report on “Montreal, Quebec, United States: the port war.”
The piece examines how many US east coast have invested heavily to expand their infrastructure, and their ability to accommodate larger container ships is drawing business away from the Port of Montreal.
Dr. Rodrigue said the situation is worrying. “The risk that could come up over the next 5, 10, 15 years, [is that] some shipping companies decide to abandon some services to Montreal, and that traffic entering Ontario and the Midwest more and more passes through other ports on the east coast and marginalizes the St. Lawrence, marginalizes Quebec and marginalizes eastern Canada. ” In the video posted on the Radio Canada site, Dr. Rodrigue appears at approximately 4:29 minutes into the story.
