Reporting on Women’s Issues in the Church

Associated Press
Dr. Phyllis Zagano, Senior Research Associate in Residence in the Department of Religion, has been published in a number of media outlets this summer.

She is featured in the Associate Press article, “US religious orders overwhelmingly back women deacons,” and in “Pope Francis, the Church’s future in Ireland and female deacons,” in The Irish Catholic about the Pope’s trip to Dublin for the World Meeting of Families. A column she wrote for the National Catholic Reporter (NCR), “#MeToo, Your Excellency,” was translated and reprinted on IHU Online, the web publication of a Brazilian academic research center. She also weighed in on the immigration crisis with “As US secures its borders from women and 8-year-olds, the Gospel gets blamed” for NCR.

Dr. Zagano is currently serving on Pope Francis’ commission to study women deacons in the Catholic Church. Her books include Holy Saturday: An Argument for the Restoration of the Female Diaconate in the Catholic Church.  She is a Fulbright scholar and the 2014 recipient of the Isaac Hecker Award for Social Justice.
