Literacy Student Talks Writing

Literacy Studies doctoral student Melissa McMullan wrote an article recently published by the Teachers & Writer’s Magazine entitled, “Problem-based learning in the writing curriculum: supporting the development of writers in a flourishing writing community.”

McMullan emphasizes the importance of encouraging students to see themselves as writers, allowing them to uncover problems and develop solutions through their own craft. She writes, “The focus on a problem-based writing curriculum in our classroom has allowed us to forge a community of writers who possess not just the necessary skills to write well, but the motivation and interest to continue to evolve.”

In addition to pursuing her doctoral degree with Hofstra’s School of Education, Melissa works as a sixth-grade reading and English teacher in the Comsewogue School District on Long Island.
