The “It” Girl and Celebrity Obsession

Professor Paula Uruburu Photographer: Zack Lane, Hofstra University Photographer
Criminal Podcast

Dr. Paula Uruburu, professor of English, is featured in the podcast Criminal about Evelyn Nesbit, the original Gibson Girl, the first “It Girl,” the Girl in the Red Velvet Swing – and the first supermodel celebrity. She was a young starlet when the famous architect Stanford White attacked her. When White was murdered by Nesbit’s husband, Harry Thaw, it sparked the beginning of America’s obsession with celebrity trials.

Dr. Uruburu is the author of 2008’s American Eve: Evelyn Nesbit, Stanford White, the Birth of the ‘It’ Girl, and the Crime of the Century. She is currently at work on a book about Lizzie Borden.
