Students in the Long Island AuD (Doctor of Audiology) Consortium, a part of Hofstra’s Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, performed free hearing tests for elementary school children in Hempstead. About 20 first- and second-year students and two faculty members participated in two screenings, held at the Joseph A. McNeil Elementary School, on March 16 and 23. Many of the school’s 700 students were in need of the tests; undetected hearing deficiencies in children can negatively affect their academic and social development. The initiative is part of the AuD program’s commitment to helping underserved communities, both locally and globally.
