Do Horror Films Scare Oscar Voters?

Dr. Rodney Hill
MTV News

Ahead of the Academy Awards ceremony this Sunday, March 4, Rodney Hill, PhD, associate professor of film studies in the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication,  spoke with MTV News host Meredith Graves about why horror films  — as well as science fiction and other fantasy genres — are traditionally snubbed for the top awards on Oscars night.  Will two of 2017’s biggest ‘scary’ movies — Get Out and The Shape of Water, both of which are nominated for multiple awards including best picture and best director — finally break the trend?

The special report also features the work of alumnus Joe Plescia (BS in Video Television and Film, 2015), a MTV staff camera operator.   Watch:
