Art education students will open an exhibit of original artwork on Wednesday, February 28 at 4:15PM on the first floor of Hagedorn Hall.
These works celebrate the diverse artistic backgrounds of graduate art education students in the School of Education. All of the pieces will be on display in Hagedorn Hall until March 14.
The students drew inspiration from something they are passionate about and reflected on an artwork that was created within the past 10 years and viewed in a gallery, museum, classroom, studio, or outdoors. Next to each piece, students include a copy of the work that inspired them and an explanation as to why they selected it.
“This exhibit illustrates our commitment to our students’ engagement with contemporary art and their continued development as artist-teachers,” said Dr. Susan Goetz Zwirn, director and professor of fine arts education.
This year’s participating artists are:

- Wendy Soledad Gil ’19, MSED; “Rabbit in the Woods”
“Many K-12 art teachers continue to be active as artists in spite of the challenges of time, energy, and stereotypes,” Dr. Zwirn added. “My research shows that artist-teachers change the educational dynamic of the classroom in ways that invigorate both the content and practice of teaching and learning. Artist-teachers cultivate complex learning environments that disrupt predictable approaches to schooling by creating unstructured and hospitable spaces characterized by play, conversation, and collaboration.”
