Food for Cover

The New York Times

Dr. Rob Leonard, director of the Graduate Program in Linguistics: Forensic Linguistics, was quoted in a New York Times article that explained that in the world of crime, food terms are a good cover when people are discussing things they don’t want others to fully understand. In the federal graft trial of Joseph Percoco, a star witness said “ziti” was how Mr. Percoco referred to bribes.

“The best code words are language that seem to mean something totally different than what it really means, but seems to fit into the context,” said Dr. Leonard.
