Benefit Reading for Prof’s Play

Jean Dobie Giebel, HCLAS Associate Dean for Curriculum and Personnel and Professor of Drama and Dance

Chasing the River, a play by Professor of Drama Jean Dobie Giebel, will have a benefit reading on Monday, January 29, at 7 p.m. at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center. Playbill reports the cast features Hofstra alumna Deborah Rayne, Olivier Award winner Andy Karl, Melissa Gilbert, Raúl Castillo, and Adina Verson.

Set in a small town in Pennsylvania, Chasing the River is about a young woman who returns home to the scene of horrible events that changed the course of her life.  As she searches for a way to make peace with her past, new revelations and unexpected reunions clash with memories of her childhood.  She’s forced to face a painful truth and begins to realize that even though she was dealt her a losing hand, there might still be a chance to turn her life around.

Directed by Karen Carpenter, the reading is a benefit for the Joyful Heart Foundation, which has a mission to “transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this violence forever.” The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre is located at 480 West 42nd Street.
