The international geographical honor society Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU) honored Hofstra University’s chapter Mu Kappa with its 2017 Honors Chapter Award. This is the third consecutive year Mu Kappa has received this honor.
Mu Kappa is based in the Department of Global Studies and Geography. Dr. Michael Longan, President of GTU, wrote in his congratulatory letter that only three GTU chapters of 130 active chapters were recognized as Honors Chapters during the 2016-2017 academic year for campus service and a commitment to outstanding student scholarship in geography.
Since its launch in spring 2012 by Associate Professor Kari Jensen, Mu Kappa has inducted 85 Hofstra students and nine Hofstra faculty members. Mu Kappa’s ceremonies and events – including diversity dinners co-hosted with the student club Get Global – are designed to expand student world views and increase the recognition and enhancement of diversity at Hofstra.
Mu Kappa has paved the way for impressive academic opportunities for Hofstra students. Several students have presented papers and posters at the regional and national annual meetings of the American Association of Geographers (AAG). Students have also represented the region at the World Geography Bowl, an annual quiz competition for teams of college-level geography students, held during the AAG’s annual meeting.
