Dr. Bret Bennington
Malverne Patch

The Malverne Patch reports that Dr. Bret Bennington, chair of the Department of Geology, Environment and Sustainability, is working with fifth-graders from Lynbrook’s Waverly Park Elementary School who are part of a research program called “A Day in the Life of a River.” They are collecting scientific data along different rivers across Long Island and sharing their findings with the public.

Using seine nets and lab equipment, the children are learning about aquatic life, biodiversity, water chemistry and quality, tides, weather and sediment samples at two different locations along the river. In addition to Dr. Bennington, they are also working with Matthew Jensen, a geologist from H2M Architects and Engineers. The data they collected will be analyzed and posted at portaltodiscovery.org/aday, to be used by other students, land use decision makers, civic groups and the general public.
