Dr. Brenda Elsey, associate professor of history, was interviewed by The Guardian for this article about South American women’s soccer fighting for legitimacy and respect, a struggle that is tied to the way that society views women.

She says, “If we look back, the pattern in the 20th century is that the more connected and central soccer is to the national identity of Latin American countries, the more difficult it is for women to find a place there.” Dr. Elsey is currently working on a book titled Futbolera: Women, Gender, and Sexuality in Latin American Sport.
