Hofstra Takes Part In Yards for Yeardley

On Friday, April 29, the entire Hofstra University community came together in a show of support for the One Love Foundation and their message of ending domestic violence. Hundreds of students, faculty and administrators came out to the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on a mission; to run one million yards in one day in memory of Yeardley Love Reynolds.

“Yards for Yeardley” was the second event hosted by Hofstra this week with the One Love Foundation. On Tuesday, April 26, student leaders hosted the One Love Foundation’s Escalation Workshop. Student facilitators were trained prior to the event, and took guests through an evening of education and prevention surrounding the topics of domestic violence and unhealthy relationships.

“It was amazing to see so many people out here to show support,” said Alex Mirante, a senior on the Pride wrestling team. “Anything we can do to honor the memory of Yeardley, and support the Foundation in her name, is something that students across the country will get behind. Domestic violence is all too real, and the more we talk about it, and learn about potential warning signs, the better equipped we will be to save lives.”

The Foundation develops compelling educational content that sparks new and novel discussions among workshop participants, inspiring them to work together to affect change in their communities. At every step, One Love empowers young people as the critical leaders of this movement, uniquely suited to mobilize a generation towards a brighter future where relationship violence is far less prevalent.

Team One Love motivates each campus to engage their own creativity and connectedness in the movement to end relationship violence. Members of Team One Love initially work to disseminate the Escalation curriculum broadly on their campus. Then work to creatively assess what makes sense for their campus.  Team One Love teams are charged with developing school-based awareness campaigns, speaker series, creative projects, and group activities that keep relationship violence at the forefront of discussion long after participation in the Escalation Workshop.  If any Hofstra students would like to join Team One Love, please contact James Lally in the Department of Athletics, at James.R.Lally@hofstra.edu.
