Professors Consider Pope Francis’ “Joy of Love”

“It is as big as Francis has been to this point,” said Dr. Julie Byrne, Hofstra University’s Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman Chair in Catholic Studies (pictured above), in Newsday’s coverage of “The Joy of Love,” Pope Francis’ proclamation on family life, which some are calling his boldest reform-minded step yet. In it, he approaches issues of sex, marriage, family planning and divorce.

Also interviewed in the article is Dr. Phyllis Zagano, senior research associate-in-residence and an adjunct professor of religion at Hofstra, who says the document “is not a major departure from church teachings, but it is, I think, a major shift in emphasis of language.”
