Hofstra advanced to the WNIT third round for the first time since 2007 when the Pride posted an 82-74 victory at Villanova on Saturday at the Pavilion. Virginia defeated Rutgers on the road on Sunday to set up the matchup in the round-of-16. Hofstra lost the only previous meeting against the Cavaliers?, which came at home in the 2010 season opener.
Hofstra is 24-8 and has already secured the second-most wins in the team’s Division I era. The record was 26 wins set by the 2006-07 squad. That team was also the last time Hofstra advanced past the second round of the WNIT. The 2007 team made it to the quarterfinals, which is still the best finish in the team’s history.
The Pride bested Harvard at home in the first round on Thursday before holding Villanova to 8-for-28 three-point shooting in the second-round win. Virginia has two road wins in the tournament, beating VCU on March 17 before upending Rutgers, 71-55. The ACC-member Cavaliers are 18-15 overall and 7-6 in road games this season.
Hofstra is 13-1 in home games. The Pride can match the 1978-79 team for the most single-season home wins in program history with one more victory.
