Dr. Alan Singer, Hofstra University School of Education Program Director of Secondary Education/Social Studies, has won the 2015 – 2016 New York Distinguished Social Studies Educator Award. The New York State Council for the Social Studies will present Dr. Singer his award at its 78th annual convention in Albany on April 1.
The Distinguished Social Studies Educator Award is given to an individual who exemplifies the best in professional social studies education in New York State. The recipient must have considerable visibility and a significantly positive impact on social studies education at both the state and national levels, and his contributions should be widely known and well-documented for at least five years.
Dr. Singer is often quoted in local and national media outlets – including The Washington Post, WNBC-TV, Newsday and Education Week — on such diverse topics as Common Core politics, school surveillance of students’ social media accounts, Holocaust education and Wall Street’s support of charter schools. He also contributes regularly to The Huffington Post.
