WRHU 88.7 FM Radio Hofstra University was named “Four-Year Radio Station of the Year” in the 2015 College Media Association Pinnacle Awards, which honor the nation’s best collegiate media organizations and student work.
The award was presented at the fall National College Media Convention, the largest gathering of college journalists and advisers in the world, in Austin, Texas on October 30. The convention is sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and the College Media Association.
In all, more than 250 colleges and universities submitted 416 organizational and 3,104 individual entries in print, broadcast, and online categories. Media professionals comprised almost 90 percent of the 102-member judging panel, from outlets such as the New York Times, CBS Television, National Public Radio, USA Today, and the Associated Press.
WRHU, Hofstra University’s student-run radio station and a component of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, is the nation’s best college radio station for two years running, according to the Princeton Review. It was named Non-Commercial Radio Station of the Year by the National Association of Broadcasters in the prestigious Marconi Awards competition in September 2014.
WRHU has also been the flagship station for the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders team since 2010, the only college radio station in the country to have such an agreement with a professional sports franchise.
