Congratulations to Hofstra students Dan Benz and Michael Nino, who solved the Mathematics Department’s September and October Problems of the Month, respectively.
Benz, a computer engineering major from Garden City, NY, came up with the correct answer of (-2/sqrt(13),-3/sqrt(13)), and Nino, a physics major from Coram, NY, solved October’s problem: x^2/4 + y^2/20 = 1.
Professor of Mathematics Raymond N. Greenwell runs this competition and says winning students will be recognized at Math Recognition Night in the spring. They will also receive a small prize from the University Relations office.
