Dr. Julie Byrne on Pope Francis’ US Visit

In a recent interview about Pope Francis’ visit to the US next week, Dr. Julie Byrne, Hofstra’s Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman Chair in Catholic Studies, discussed the excitement surrounding his Papacy, which has been marked by a focus less on doctrine and more on compassion and human interaction.

There are some issues, however, on which the Pope’s views appear at odds with American culture, including women’s role in society and free market capitalism.

Dr. Byrne also explains the significance of his being the first Latin-American Pope and of his tradition of visiting prisons in the countries he travels to, including a planned stop at a correctional facility in Philadelphia.
