The Hofstra Tax Society, which annually provides free tax preparation services for the community, won the 2014-15 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Student Organization at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

This year, more than 50 student volunteers from the Tax Society prepared hundreds of returns for local residents through its VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program, a Hofstra community service initiative that began more than two decades ago.

“One of the best things about it is that we are learning things, getting tools, that will help us professionally,” said Stephen Siu, outgoing club president, who graduated in May with a BBA in Accounting. He will earn a M.S. in Taxation in 2016. “Every year, we have a CPA and a professor to teach us about the new tax rules and regulations. For a student to get that kind of training is amazing.

Siu said he discovered an unknown talent and interest in taxation as a result of his work with the VITA program. “I love tax and I love giving back to the community,” he said.

The society’s current faculty advisor is Professor Anthony Basile, who volunteered with the Hofstra VITA program as a student.
