Student Composes Hofstra’s New Alma Mater

Hofstra’s new anthem! “Blue and Gold,” composed by junior Robbie Rosen, has been selected as the University’s new alma mater and will be performed publicly for the first time at commencement exercises this Sunday, May 17, 2015. In a competition sponsored by the Department of Music, Rosen’s submission was one of eight vying to replace “The Netherlands,” written in 1937 by Dr. Hans J. Gottlieb, an English instructor. “Blue and Gold” was selected by a panel of judges that included Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Herman Berliner, Dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Bernard Firestone, and Music Department Chair Nathalie Robinson. Also serving as judges were Music Professors Cindy Bell, David Fryling and Philip Stoecker.

Dr. Firestone said, “Robbie Rosen’s composition immediately struck me as capturing the essence of what Hofstra represents while offering an easy to sing and enjoyable to listen to melody.”

Rosen, 21, a Jazz and Commercial Music major, has been writing songs since he was 8 years old. He advanced to the semifinals of Season 10 of American Idol (2011) and has been consistently performing and composing since then. He has shared the stage with Rascal Flatts, Martina McBride, Kenny Rogers, Billy Dean, Darius Rucker, Jose Feliciano, and Debbie Gibson, and has opened for KARMIN, Aaron Carter, and “The Voice” winner, Cassadee Pope.

Despite his busy schedule, Rosen has maintained an overall GPA of 3.95 and was a Provost’s Scholar for the Spring 2014 and Fall 2013 semesters.

Blue And Gold (Lyrics)

Where minds are filled with wonder, and hearts are full of pride,
There stands our Alma Mater, so radiant a shine.
Nurturing thy scholars, like parents raise their young.
Dear Hofstra, we are grateful, and thus we thank thee for…

Inspiring us, and guiding us through all the great unknown.
Oh hail the blue and gold!

Unrivaled motivation, invaluable and true.
Selfless with thy knowledge, and vision to pursue.
Through all the lands we journey, thou shall remain our home,
Dear Hofstra, we are grateful, and thus we thank thee for…

Inspiring us, and guiding us through all the great unknown.
Oh hail the blue and gold!
