Hofstra Chemistry students presented research and seminars at the 63rd Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) sponsored by the American Chemical Society’s New York Section on Saturday, May 9, at Queensborough Community College.
The students representing Hofstra this year were:
Beena Biju – “Fox-4 Cephamycinase: An Analysis of Structure and Function.” Faculty adviser: Scott Lefurgy. Beena is a senior biochemistry major from Elmont, NY.
Lauren Carlucci and Edward Zhou – “Characterization of a Putative Haloalkane Dehalogenase From Caulobacter Cresentus.” Faculty adviser: Emily Mundorff. Lauren and Edward are senior biochemistry majors. Lauren is from Meriden, CT, and Edward is from Poughkeepsie, NY.
Harleen Gill (with Kevin Lopez ’14) – “Quantitative Determination of Silver Inhibition of Halide Accelerated Aluminum Corrosion.” Faculty adviser: Sabrina Sobel. Harleen is a biochemistry major from East Elmhurst, NY.
William Jordan – “Substrate Selectivity of Fox-4 Cephamycinase: Role of the R2 Loop.” Faculty adviser: Scott Lefurgy. William is a biology major from Syosset, NY.
Rachel Lalmansingh and Angelika Rafalowski – “Chromatographic Isolation of Bovine Pregnancy Metabolites in Urine.” Faculty advisers: Michael De Castro and Nanette Wachter. Rachel, a student from Freeport, NY, and Angelika, who hails from Lindenhurst, NY, are biochemistry majors.
Thomas Massetti (with Kevin Muller ’14) – “Analysis of E-Cigarette Flavors with Gas Chromotagraphy. Faculty adviser: Ling Huang. Thomas, pictured above, is a senior from Massapequa Park, NY.
Botai Xuan and Alex Gilbert (with Harshul Khanna ’14 and Evan Flores ’13) – “Investigation Into Zinc (II) Ion Coordination with Tetracycline Via Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.” Faculty advisers: and Sabrina Sobel. Botai, who is completing his junior year, is a biochemistry major from Bangkok, and Alex, a chemistry major, is from West Hempstead, NY.
Edward Zhou – “Characterization of a Putative Haloalkane Dehalogenase From Saccharomonosporea Azurea.” Faculty adviser: Emily Mundorff.
Sahil Aggarwal – research seminar on “Synthesis of 3,4-BIS(2’-Acetylbenzoyl)-Oxadiazole-N-Oxide. Faculty adviser: Nanette Wachter. Sahil is a chemistry major from Cedarhurst, NY.
