Hofstra’s Department of Fine Arts, Design, Art History presented its annual Student Art Show, featuring more than 300 of pieces of artwork created by more than 100 Hofstra students in painting, drawing, 3D, photography, design and new media.
At the opening reception on April 29, at the Rosenberg Gallery, awards were given for the best work from each discipline, as well as the Outside Juror Award and the Hofstra University Purchase Award.
This year’s Outside Juror, alumna Nicole Barth, co-owner and creative director of Ronik Design and a 2005 Hofstra Fine Arts graduate, heaped praise on the quality of the student work and reflected how technology has been incorporated in this year’s art show.
“It’s clear that there has been a big evolution in terms of technology and applications. It’s paved a way to bigger thinking,”
Barth went on to add, “There was a high level of maturity in the show and awareness of the world, not just through visual culture but social issues, art history and current events and works of other artists.”
Kat Diener, an Art History and Fine Arts double major, was honored with the Hofstra University Purchase Award, a $1,000 award – made possible by anonymous donors – that allows the Department to acquire a work of art exhibited in the student show. “It’s exciting, and it feels good after all the hard work,” she said.
