Student staffers at WRHU 88.7 FM Radio Hofstra University won two Mark of Excellence awards, honoring the best in collegiate journalism, from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ):
- Best All-Around Radio Newscast
Winner: WRHU-FM Newsline 10/27/14 – by Neil A. Carousso ‘17, Rich DeKorte ‘16, Dan Savarino ‘15, Juliana Spano ‘17, Sean Bates ‘17
- Best Radio Sports Reporting
Winner: “Dave Finn: Golf Fanatic,” by Rich DeKorte ‘16
Neil Carousso ’17 and Scott Aharoni ’16 were also finalists in the television sports reporting category for their piece, “Farewell, Captain Derek Jeter.”
The awards recognize work done in 2014 in SPJ’s Region 1, which comprises Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. Honorees received awards certificates during the SPJ’s Region 1 spring conference, held at Hofstra University on April 17-18. First-place winners now move on to the national Mark of Excellence competition among category winners from the 12 SPJ regions.
Award-winning college radio station WRHU, part of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, is ranked number one in The Princeton Review’s 2015 edition of The Best 379 Colleges. It was also named “Non-Commercial Radio Station of the Year” by the National Association of Broadcasters in the prestigious Marconi Awards competition in September 2014.
