First-year graduate students in the Physician Assistant Studies Program recently partnered with the Hempstead School District to bring educational health workshops to school children in grades kindergarten through high school.
Four dozen PA students created interactive presentations and activities on preventative health issues such as hand washing, oral hygiene, smoking, nutrition, exercise, mental health, and bullying that they shared at nine schools within Hempstead between Feb. 23 and March 19.
The outreach initiative was part of PA Studies’ preventative medicine course, taught by Assistant Professors Jessica Steier and Christine Zammit, who played a key role in establishing the collaboration with Hempstead school district officials. The professors hope to bring the workshops back to the district in the future and develop workshops for parents as well.
