Biology Prof. Javier Izquierdo Explores Emerging Biofuels

Dr. Javier Izquierdo, assistant professor of microbiology, has coauthored a review in the journal Biofuels that explores the multiple applications of microbes growing at temperatures above 70oC (>158oC) as novel production avenues for biofuels. The review discusses two different types of emerging biofuels, electrofuels and lignofuels, and the roles extreme thermophilic microorganisms can play in in the production of these.

Current approaches for the production of biofuels rely too heavily on sugars from food crops and utilize only a fraction of plant material, making them extremely inefficient. The discovery, study and development of extreme thermophilic microbes provide a unique platform for new alternative biotechnologies that are posed to overcome these limitations.
